• Escheatment Unclaimed Property
  Any financial asset, tangible or intangible, that remains unclaimed for a certain length of time is considered to be unclaimed property. States have statutes that require all businesses holding items deemed to be unclaimed property to file annual reports and remit the property to the state.

Important Escheatment Definitions:

• Abandoned Property (Unclaimed property) - Tangible or intangible property that is unclaimed by its rightful owner.
• Dormant Period - The time when an owner of property does not take action on their property.
• Escheat - A transfer of property that makes the state the legal custodian of the property. Property reported to the state as unclaimed property can also be described as escheated property.
• Holder - A person (entity), wherever organized or domiciled, who is in possession of property belonging to another, or is indebted to another on an obligation.  A holder also refers to a person who has reported unclaimed property to the state.
• Owner - Creditor, claimant, or payee in the case of intangible property, or a person (company) having a legal or equitable interest in property.
